Prinevillecity
Located in central Oregon, United States, Prineville is a city and the county seat of Crook County with a population of around 10,000 people. Named after its first merchant Barney Prine, Prineville is a city and the county seat of Crook County, Oregon, in the United States.Positioned on the eastern side of the Cascade Range, in the high desert region of central Oregon, the city was established as a hub for the local timber and agriculture industries during the late 1800s. Today, Prineville is renowned for its outdoor recreation pursuits such as camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing, with nearby attractions like the Ochoco Mountains and Prineville Reservoir State Park offering a diverse range of activities.
The city has undergone significant development over the years, with the growth of technology companies such as Facebook, which operates a large data center in the area. As for cultural landmarks, Prineville features several museums, including the Bowman Museum, showcasing displays on the history of Crook County and its environs. The city also hosts a few yearly events, among them the Prineville Hotshot Memorial Run and the Crooked River Roundup Rodeo.
Prineville was chosen as the site for Facebook's new data center in 2010, but the decision sparked controversy among environmental organizations like Greenpeace, who criticized the use of coal-generated electricity by the power utility company, PacifiCorp, contracted to power the center. Despite this, Facebook has contributed to various projects in Prineville since then, including water mains and updated technology in local schools. In 2012, Apple announced its own "Green Data Center" project, which would be situated on a 160-acre tract of land it owned. Over the past eight years, both Facebook and Apple have invested more than a billion dollars into multiple data centers located within Prineville City's limits.
Since its establishment in 1952, Les Schwab Tire Centers, a chain of tire stores, has been a part of Prineville's identity. The company has grown tremendously, with over 500 stores in seven states - California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, generating more than $1.5 billion in annual revenue, and ranking as the second-largest private tire retailer in the United States, according to the AP. However, in 2006, the company announced that it would relocate its headquarters to the nearby city of Bend, where several of its executives resided, including the newly-appointed CEO, Dick Borgman. Despite this, Prineville has experienced an economic resurgence over the years, with its reliance on the timber industry waning. The presence of federal jobs through the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service, as well as a thriving housing market and burgeoning tourism industry, have contributed to the city's diverse and thriving economy. This has positioned the city to weather changes like Les Schwab Tire Centers' headquarters relocation without devastating effects.Prineville is in the Crook County School District and offers these schools to students:
